A 51-year-old man was killed Monday morning in a head-on collision on Route 10 north of Hershey Lane.
According to the Sadsbury Police Department, Parkesburg resident Bruce Oas was killed after his vehicle collided with a pickup truck driven by 19-year-old Bradley Piffin. Police said a preliminary investigation indicated Piffin’s truck was traveling north on Route 10 when it veered into the opposite lane and collided with another vehicle before striking Oas’ Ford Focus head on.
The first vehicle, a silver Honda, ended up in a field about 100 feet from the main impact. The driver of the Honda, 20-year-old Cody Roggio, received treatment at an area hospital for face and neck injuries. Oas’ vehicle sustained heavy front end damage. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said Piffin, a resident of northeast Maryland, told investigators that he had nodded off at the wheel just prior to the crash. The official cause of the crash remains under investigation pending lab results, according to Sadsbury Sgt. Richard Imhoff. Piffin remains hospitalized, Imhoff said.
Route 10 remained closed for several hours Monday as members of the Chester County Serious Crash Assistance Team assisted local police with accident reconstruction. Police said the investigation had not yet determined if excessive speed was a factor in the crash.
