Pa. offers security grants to schools, area police

SRO BadgePennsylvania state officials said Thursday that 13 area school districts and police departments and one charter school in Philadelphia were awarded grants for school resource officers and school police officers.

In all, Gov. Corbett and State Sen. Joe Scarnati (R., Jefferson) said, the state would distribute 81 grants to schools, towns, and police departments totaling $3.9 million to improve safety and security in schools.

Scarnati, the president pro tempore of the Senate, sponsored the legislation expanding the state’s Safe Schools grant program.

Applicants could seek up to $60,000 for school resource officers, who have the same duties as school police officers but also work with students to prevent drug and alcohol abuse, and up to $40,000 for a school police officer.

Winners were chosen from among 114 entities that sought the funds. Priority was given to those that employ police officers who have received additional training to work with children and teens in schools.

In Bucks, grants were awarded to the Borough of Quakertown ($60,000); Lower Makefield Township Police Department ($55,384); and Morrisville Borough School District ($56,346).

Chester County: Octorara Area School District ($40,000); Great Valley School District ($40,000); Kennett Square Borough Police Department ($59,548); and Oxford Area School District ($40,000).

  1. Reblogged this on Timothy Alexander and commented:

Be sure to share your thoughts and concerns, about hiring a School Resource Officer or Security Guard, with Board members and Dr. Newcome.

  2. “Octorara Area School District ($40,000)”
    Waste of tax payers money.

  3. Where will the money come from in future years? We can’t count on grant money forever to pay for this. The benefit-cost ratio indicates this is a bad idea.

  4. Those in favor of hiring a School Resource Officer or Security Guard are passionate and relatively organized. They have been working on this for a long time, but seem to be a small group.

Those opposed have begun to speak out… both at the Safety Task Force and School Board Meetings. They don’t seem to believe it is necessary or would even be effective.

People who want their voice heard need to email Board members, email Dr. Newcome, and/or speak up at Meetings.

  5. So now that the state pulled $40,000 in tax dollars for a school safety they give us no choice but to try and find a way to spend it because it is already dedicated no matter if we take it or not. This is a scam at best because now the tax payers are paying for something whether they want to or not.

These days the cops are foaming at the mouth for work, and they are praying for terror attacks, so they can get more funding and beef up their police force. It almost sounds like martial law is coming, and that may be the main reason why Obama is pushing for gun control every other minute in my opinion. Hitler blew up his own capitol building and said children would be harmed if they didn’t take action. Read a history book and see for yourself.

We do “NOT” need a resource officer, and if you don’t agree there are other schools out there for your your children to attend because we can’t afford any more of this nonsense in the Octorara school district. I’m teaching my children to be tough in these situations instead of being scared to go to school.

  6. This all stems from Sandy Hook.First of all i do not believe any thing the government says .Look up Operation Northwoods that was put to JFK in 1962.Operation Northwoods was a series of false flag proposals that originated within the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) of the United States government in 1962. The proposals, which called for the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), or other operatives, to commit perceived acts of terrorism in U.S. cities and elsewhere, were rejected by the Kennedy administration.[2]
At the time of the proposal, Cuba had recently become communist under Fidel Castro. The operation proposed creating public support for a war against Cuba by blaming it for terrorist acts.[3] To this end, Operation Northwoods proposals recommended hijackings and bombings followed by the introduction of phony evidence that would implicate the Cuban government. Look at everything that has happened since 1962 do you still trust your government?

  7. “People who give up their freedom for protection deserve neither”
    Somebody important said that once!

  8. If you do the math if everyone with a child in school paid $16.00 dollars per student per year.Average enrollment is 2,500.it would be affordable for them to pay for it themselves.2,500 x $16.00 = 40,000.

  9. I think it is ok to be for or against police in the school without all of the outrageousness. To say that cops want terror attacks is at best stupid. With all due respect I do not see what Operation Northwoods has to do with this conversation about school security. It’s interesting to me that nobody is talking about the actual people behind the national push for school security officers. That would be the NRA! This conversation also did NOT START with Sandy Hook. The NRA did ramp up their campaign for officers following Sandy Hook, but the conversation didn’t start there, it’s been going on for a long time.
Also, keep in mind when you look at the $40,000 figure, that is JUST the grant, that is NOT the cost of said officer(s). That figure is estimated to be $100,000 or more. I do not support school security officers because I think it is an expense we can not afford and there is absolutely NO EVIDENCE that it is effective. Anyone who wants to commit this type of terror can do so with or without security officers in our schools. All they have to do is get on the bus at the last stop in Parkesburg and open fire. Then, the NRA will want an officer on every bus.
The mall shooting in Maryland this morning is further evidence that guns are everywhere and with ready access to guns people will use them when they have even a momentarily lapse of sanity. These types of incidents happen just as frequently in churches and other public places. You cannot protect everywhere we and our children go with armed guards.
A former police officer shot a father and husband in a movie theatre last week in Florida because he was texting during the previews. A mother in Florida killed her 2 teenage children and then herself several weeks ago rather than deal with her divorce. When guns are readily available they will be used more and more frequently. The young perp at Sandy Hook was taught how to shoot by his mother and she stocked the house with guns. Violence begets violence. More guns (no matter who has them) means more shooting.

    • Where is it said, that cops want terror attacks. You like the host of PT try to stir things up . Operation Northwoods has everything to do with the way things are run today in this country. JFK shot ,MLK shot, RFK shot . Vietnam the Gulf of Tonkin lie.The outcome Vietnam.

      • “These days cops are foaming at the mouth for more work and they are praying for terror attacks.” I’m sorry, but I’m still not making the connection between the things you mention that happen 45-50 years ago and the discussion about security officers at Octorara. • The Government wouldn’t last 1 second against the American patriots David, and just an FYI a local police officer said to me in his own words “we need another terror attack to help build up our police force for protection”…Protection from what? Possibly for themselves against civil unrest if Obama tries to take away our guns with a false flag attack described by Mr. Walker. Americans will not kill each other as you suggested and homeland security is already losing the battle. Research the new world order, and agenda 21. Then ask yourself which side are you on.

          • I don’t believe in conspiracy theories Joey and I don’t see things as one side or the other, we are all Americans. No one is trying to take anyone’s guns away. If you don’t think Americans are killing each other at an unprecedented rate than perhaps you haven’t been paying attention.

        • If the cia , joint chiefs aka northwoods. was able to come up with a scheme to terrorise the American people over 50 years ago. What do you think they are doing today .

          • They are using false flag terror attacks to create a fear based society in my opinion of course…It really is no secret and the new world order is losing the battle. The best way to persuade a society to give up their rights is to scare them with false flag attacks, which will make people think they need security everywhere and eventually give up all their rights and liberties. Americans without guns would be an easy take over by homeland security, but these false flag attacks didn’t work as they planned I guess.

          • Who is it that’s trying to take over? What are they trying to take over? Shootings in malls, churches and schools are real events done by average citizens with too easy access to guns and cases of ammunition. People with guns in their homes are 35 times more likely to be killed with a gun. Suicide by gun is at an all time high. Military suicide is at an all time high. Women killed by guns are much more likely to be killed by a gun in their own home and by someone they know or live with. These aren’t theories, they are reality in today’s gun-crazy world. People who perpetuate conspiracy theories are the actual people who are trying to frighten the populace. That’s not the government.

          • David that is your opinion and position. I have my opinions, and you have yours…mindless bickering at best and it doesn’t solve anything. Do the research, and find facts about what makes Americans do what they do. Have you heard of the MK ultra mind control, Agenda 21, new world order? There are Government documents proving my assumptions, and I am not trying to scare anyone with that information sir, I am opening their eyes to corruption.

          • You are certainly entitled to your opinions Joey, but I’m just not nearly as scared or concerned as you seem to be.

    • So if I have guns and teach my children to shoot them properly they are gonna kill me and everyone else? Give me a break, and all I read on here is you trying discredit me and everyone else who is standing up and voicing their opinions.

      • I’m not trying to discredit you Joey. You have every right to get as many guns as you want and teach your children to use them as you see fit. I’m simply stating the facts that people are much more likely to be killed by their own guns then they are to ward off intruders into their homes. It is a fact that having a gun or guns in your home significantly increases the risk of death and injury as opposed to most people believing they are safer with guns in the home. Date: Sun, 26 Jan 2014 18:43:01 +0000 To: davidjones384@msn.com

        • Mr. Jones,
It is not up to you to determine how someone defends themselves or their family. Also, it is a fact that having NO gun increases the risk of death or injury 1000%. I’m sure any local criminal would love to know where the gun-free homes are.

  10. Here is your answer to gun control the Second Amendment and a man a smarter than all the Morons today in D C– Thomas Jefferson
“No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government”

    • I am well aware of what was said several hundred years ago and these same words are used again and again and again. What “I SEE” is people using this reasoning to load up and fight their own demons, whether they are in their church, in their school, in the local mall, or even in their own home. In reality, if you were to try to fight the government with these guns you would last about 2 seconds. No, people are loading up on weapons, but it is not to join a militia or to fight the government, it is to fight and kill each other.

      • Dave ; I read alot the problem with mainstream media is that it is corporate owned therefore goverment controlled. Here are some sites that might entertain you. Infowars, breitbart, wnd, dailysheeple, dailybeast, theblaze, beforeitsnews and veterans today.I will guess you have not heard of the march scheduled for may-16 American spring or about the radiation coming from fukishima japan.Personally you probably still think Oswald killed Kennedy.Go to veterans today and look up Jim Fetzer for a very good take on that event.

        • I give a mega jumbo thumbs up on that !!!

          • The people that actually own and control the media in this country are a very small group of wealthy Republicans who support unlimited gun purchases and access to guns. These people want you to believe you are safer with guns in your home when the opposite is actually true. Date: Sun, 26 Jan 2014 23:08:17 +0000 To: davidjones384@msn.com

        • Hahahaahahaa did you say Republicans own the media…I had to laugh at that one. The federal reserve banking interests own the media and it is regulated by the Government…Not Republicans or Democrats David…please send me a link to where you heard that one! You are a die hard Democrat and that is great, and it shows, and you also have no facts to back up anything you post in my opinion. Please spend 5 to 10 years investigating before coming into this ring with your hear say comments.

          • Actually, the media contribute in almost equal parts to both parties and have for a long time. This is not unlike many very wealthy corporations and people who like to cover their bases because all they really want is access to whomever is calling the shots. NBC for instance, owned by Comcast and run by people like David Cohen (who used to work for Rendell) is now raising funds and supporting Corbett. Sumner Redstone who pretty much owns CBS supported George W. Bush, even though he has been known to be a lifelong Democrat. I don’t think anyone ever confused Fox and Rubert Murdock with liberal philosophies.

You sound pretty optimistic that this blog will still exist in 5-10 years.

          • According to you and Tim, the Gazette is the ONLY TRUE news source in Parkesburg. That at least means the local media is owned and operated by a Republican! I also find it interesting that you are trying to stop me from speaking my views here for up to 10 years! How is that different than council limiting speech to 3 minutes? At least there I can speak for 3 minutes a month over the next 10 years. I fear you are no different than those you criticize Joey and given the same power you would be even more draconian. Who Owns The Media? The 6 Monolithic Corporations That Control Almost Everything We Watch, Hear And Read

Back in 1983, approximately 50 corporations controlled the vast majority of all news media in the United States. Today, ownership of the news media has been concentrated in the hands of just six incredibly powerful media corporations. These corporate behemoths control most of what we watch, hear and read every single day. They own television networks, cable channels, movie studios, newspapers, magazines, publishing houses, music labels and even many of our favorite websites. Sadly, most Americans don’t even stop to think about who is feeding them the endless hours of news and entertainment that they constantly ingest. Most Americans don’t really seem to care about who owns the media. But they should. The truth is that each of us is deeply influenced by the messages that are constantly being pounded into our heads by the mainstream media. The average American watches 153 hours of television a month. In fact, most Americans begin to feel physically uncomfortable if they go too long without watching or listening to something. Sadly, most Americans have become absolutely addicted to news and entertainment and the ownership of all that news and entertainment that we crave is being concentrated in fewer and fewer hands each year.

The six corporations that collectively control U.S. media today are Time Warner, Walt Disney, Viacom, Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp., CBS Corporation and NBC Universal. Together, the “big six” absolutely dominate news and entertainment in the United States. But even those areas of the media that the “big six” do not completely control are becoming increasingly concentrated. For example, Clear Chan

          • David Jones – “The people that actually own and control the media in this country are a very small group of wealthy Republicans ”

David Jones – “Actually, the media contribute in almost equal parts to both parties and have for a long time.”

Making things up as he goes.

    • Well Dave was part of the Parkesburg Government years ago!

      • I’m not sure about the point you are trying to make here Joey about me being part of the government years ago in Parkesburg. Weren’t you trying to be part of the government yourself in 2013? The local government has nothing to do with gun control. Are you saying you need guns to oppose the local government? Please explain the connection to gun control, the second amendment and local government, because I don’t see a straight line there.

        • I ran for “Mayor” David, and it was because the town wanted me to, and nothing more. If you are looking for an answer regarding some political agenda you’re gonna be waiting till infinity. The term gun control is against the constitution so yes I am against it. The local Government doesn’t allow questions at meetings, so the council goes unharmed…but not for much longer. I actually found something you signed that was very interesting to read. Local Government could easily silence a public spectator for asking questions, and who do they call? The Police dept run by the Mayor.

          • I think the truth here Joey is that at the time (2 years ago) when you starting running for the office of Mayor, the reaction of the “majority” of people in Parkesburg was WHO is Joey Rzonca. I don’t think it’s accurate to say you ran for Mayor because the people wanted you to. You ran because YOU wanted to and then to your credit a fair number of residents supported your campaign, but that happened long after YOU decided to run for your OWN reasons.

          • Once again David trying to discredit Joey and anyone else who wants to make a difference. You are petty David in my opinion, and this bickering session is over.

  11. I am against paying for the security officer with taxpayer dollars. 1) That is a lot of money annually and 2) If, God forbid, something does happen one day, it seems to me there is a good chance it will occur at some location other than where that officer will happen to be at that moment.

  12. Here is a conspiracy theory for David Jones. Lets say that the Government is regulating the schools with common core and they forced the districts to purchase ipads. The ipads have a tracking system in them for if they are lost or stolen right? They also have a camera on them right? Sounds like a good way for the Government to spy on Americans, and yes David the Government is monitoring us through the NSA, which was exposed not that long ago. Is it true…I doubt it….could it be true absolutely!

    • I really don’t spend a minute of my life thinking about these things Joey. I don’t fear the government. I remember not that long ago you accused me of going past your house too many times and watching you, or something equally silly. When I pointed out you live next to the train station and between that and my brother’s house you grew very quiet. I think you “wanted” to believe something underhanded so much you failed to see the obvious.

These things are fun in the movies Joey, but they have very little to do with the average person. It appears to be true that the government has been tracking phone calls and emails, but given that they’ve been unable to get the healthcare network computers running properly, I doubt they are much more efficient with their monitoring program.

      • Mindless bickering, and off the topic! That’s David for you…anything to discredit a person who thrives to make a difference by uncovering unethical ways of the good ole’ boy political team.

        • What you have actually been all about for 2 years is trying to attack others with outrageous, outlandish and unfounded accusations in an attempt to fuel your own political aspirations. In 2 years of this nonsense you have thrown so many ugly accusations at everybody that disagrees with you or you want to replace in political office that it is absolutely riotous to hear you now complain about people putting a mirror in front of your hypocrisy. April 2011 was your accusation about corruption in the police and we are still waiting for even ONE SHREAD of evidence. With all of the tools of government oversight and the ethics committee in Harrisburg if there was ANY SUBSTANCE to ANY of your nonsense it would have come out a long time ago. So far all we have is Joey trying to build his own political career by disparaging those who serve and work hard for our community. These public servants are not perfect by any stretch, but they are also good people by and large who don’t deserve this nonsense. Date: Mon, 27 Jan 2014 22:47:38 +0000 To: davidjones384@msn.com

          • This is how David goes “Fishing for information” and nothing more. Petty arguments to stir the pot. This is also how a former borough council member acts when you try to express your views. Anything to keep the good ole’ boy network together…Mindless bickering because he has no facts to back his accusations (which could be slanderous), and continue to bash an honest hard working man like myself.
