Atglen, Pennsylvania – Octorara Area School District announced today that the LEA will use data from Pennsylvania’s School Performance Profile (SPP) to more comprehensively assess the academic performance of each of its schools. While schools previously received a No Child Left Behind designation, public schools will now receive an academic performance score. An online public portal, the Pennsylvania School Performance Profile will now provide demographic data, academic data, and an academic performance score for public schools in the state.

“Unlike previous measures of our schools, the School Performance Profile utilizes many data points to measure our schools’ academic strength,” said Elena Wilson, Director of Curriculum and Instruction. “While we receive a score for our schools, the more important aspect of this resource is that it allows us to acknowledge our strengths and use the profile as a tool for student improvement.”

The School Performance Profile academic performance score is based not only on test scores but many other factors that signal student achievement. A student growth factor measures how well students are progressing toward proficiency in state assessments. Also measured are graduation and attendance rates, and the degree of rigorous course offerings at the secondary level.

Many data elements come together to create the academic performance score. A score is reported for each school and is based upon indicators that define a high performing school in Pennsylvania.

“Using the data available through the PA SPP provides us with a broader lens to view the academic performance in our schools. Our staff is using these data to more fully evaluate the programs and services provided to students,” said Dr. Thomas Newcome, Superintendent, Octorara Area School District.

“Our schools welcome an additional view of academic performance. Our administrators and teachers are always open to new tools and strategies to further enhance data-informed decision making in our schools,” said Newcome.

Access to the Pennsylvania School Performance Profile will be available beginning October 4th at http://paschoolperformance.org or through the district portal at http://www.octorara.k12.pa.us.

“Octorara Area School District is pleased to report that all schools’ SPP scores met or exceeded the standard. However, there is much room for growth as the district continually strives to improve programming that will maximize success for all students,” stated Wilson.

OASD will provide a closer look at its School Performance profile data during the October 14th School Board Work Session, beginning at 7:30 PM in the JRHS Multi-purpose room at 228 Highland Road, Atglen, PA 19310.

“This presentation will begin the public conversation on school improvement as it relates to School Performance Profile data. The conversation will continue during monthly Education Committee Meetings, which are held the fourth Monday of the month, at 6:00 PM in the Octorara Area School District Office,” said Wilson. “The meetings are open to the public and we invite all stakeholders to join us in conversation about our successes, strengths and the District’s plan for continued student growth.”
