The 4-H Strawberry Roundup, held June 5 at the Farm & Home Center, raised more than $1,300 for the 4-H members’ projects.
Twenty-three members participated in the event, sponsored by the Lancaster Rotary Club, and were judged on their project books and strawberries. The berries were later auctioned off by Keller Auctioneers to Rotary members.
Ainsley Elkner, of Marietta, was named grand champion of Division 2, receiving $150 for her quart of strawberries, and Terran Smoker, of Cochranville, was the division’s reserve champion, receiving a bid of $120. Division 2 includes youth exhibiting berries for the first time.
Luke Burman, of Strasburg, was named grand champion of Division 3 and received $200 for his winning berries. Isaac Shenk, of Manheim, was named the division’s reserve champion, receiving a bid of $110. Division 3 included 4-H members who have shown berries more than once.
Division 1 featured first-year members who will be eligible to show their strawberries next year.
Hess Barbecue catered the event, which also gave youth the opportunity to make strawberry syrup and participate in craft activities.
